You could be rafting up the Poudre, but it is also an amazing stop for some pretty intense trails if you are looking for a day hike. Poudre Canyon is a narrow canyon that stretches 40miles along the Cache La Poudre River in Larimer County, Colorado. The name means "Hiding Place of Powder." According to legend, French fur trappers in the 1820's were caught by a tremendous snowstorm. To lighten their load, they buried large amounts of gunpowder (poudre) in a hiding place (cache) along the banks of the river. Today, Cache La Poudre blesses us with a wide range of outdoor activities year round. The Poudre is famous for tubing, kayaking, white water rafting, trout fishing, backpacking, and the Mishawaka Amphitheatre.
The river is the closest quality rafting to Denver and the Rocky Mountain National Park Area. The National Wild and Scenic River System was created to protect unique river environments from undue development and exploitation. Only rivers of exceptional character and undeveloped state are eligible and of those nominated very few are enlisted in the program. The very small number of outfitters licensed on this river makes it very uncrowded. The Cache La Poudre River (referred to as the POO-DER by locals) has a lot of good whitewater and excellent scenery. From its beginnings high in Rocky Mountain National Park this river's sparkling water rushes down through the steep Poudre Canyon to create a wonderful mix of excitement and adventure that makes any rafting trip special.
